Reader Alison B. Asked If Mr. Modtomic Might Take A Quick Look Around The DC Craigslist For Some Cheap Style. Did He Find Any? You Betcha! Status: Not My Turf!

Greetings from Washington, DC - Large Letter Postcard

With the holidays behind us it looks like lots of folks are purging their cribs of extra, unneeded and recently usurped furnishings.  It's a winning situation for everybody!  They get the much needed space back and we get the bargains we so lust after!  Let us take a stroll through the last weekend's craigslist postings in the Washington DC area.

Eames style lounge chair and ottoman - $150 (McLean) Another bargain priced Eames lounger knock

off! Don't turn your nose up at these, for a fraction of cost of the real thing you can pick up one of

these...and they are quite comfy. I've got one and regularly nap in it.

3 midcentury modern style chairs - $50 (Shirlington) More Eames knockoffs. This time Eiffel base side

chairs. From reading the ad it seems they are asking $50 for all three. Even if you're like me and MUST

have a full set of four, having to buy another at full price still leaves you miles ahead.

Butterfly Chair and Disc Chair - $10 (Takoma Park) The cover is so not vintage but the round bar steel

base certainly must be. I can't imagine any companies are making non-folding butterfly chair knock off

anymore. At ten bucks you could spend the money you've saved on a REAL nice leather seat for it!

MCM - mid century Table/Desk in the style Of Milo Baughman - $150 (Eastern Shore 21663) If you've

got a large dining room to fill and like the idea of doing a mix and match of styles, this large dining table

with leaf might be a cool starting point. I'm a big fan of the chrome steel base and you could pair this brute

up with just about any sort of chair from knock off Chippendale claw foots to Lucite "Ghost" chairs to

wire framed Bertoias.

Four Modern Style Oak Kitchen Chairs - $125 (Vienna) Or you could keep it simple and just pick up

these four nice Scandinavian teak (not Oak!) chairs.  They probably aren't that old but they've got the

vintage vibe. and they are priced right!

Table - Glass Coffee Table - $40 (Manassas) This looks like a Knoll Barcelona table ($1600 new).

Heck, it might even be!  Even if it's not, it's a good looking knock off and it's stupid cheap.  Believe

me...if this were here in the StL. I'd have gone to get it today!  That glass top alone is worth way more

than $40.

Fun 1960's Coffee Table - $85 (Vienna) If your living room needs lean a little more retro than minimalist,

you might want to pick up this great somewhat space age blonde piece. Looks like it's in pretty good

shape.

LEATHER CHAIR W/ OTTOMAN - $75 (POTOMAC) Check it out! It's not just a nice looking mod

lounge chair and ottoman, it's Heywood Wakefield! At $75 it's ridiculously under priced too! Again, I'd

snatch this up in a hot second...if it where anywhere near here!  I want it, I want it, I Want It!

Red Cord Lunna Swivel Easy Chair with ottoman - $150 (Takoma Park) If someone has already

snatched up the Hey-Wake lounger and you're up for a pop of color...maybe this IKEA set is for you.

I'm not a big fan of IKEA but if it'll keep it out of a landfill for a little while more, I can bring myself to

recommend the stuff...if it's cheap!

Dining Table (Dark Oak Color) w/Leaf Extensions & 4 Chairs - $80 (Vienna, VA) Why does

everybody in DC think their chairs are made of Oak? This Walnut set actually only has 4 chairs (not

the 6 shown in the photo) as the seller explains that they accidentally tossed a pair! Still, a bargain in

my book and miles of style.

  1. You're amazing! I look at the DC Craigslist every day and I didn't see half this stuff. Clearly I have sooo much more to learn.

  2. How do you manage to do this--is your brain, like, fused with the Craigslist mainframe Gods? I second Alison, you are AMAZING. I am in Dallas for a week, can you work your charm there please?

  4. Hard to believe the chair and otto were a H/W as the company went belly up in the early 70's, but you never know. Listings gone, so some one snatched. Great finds all the way around. You have to be way diligent on CL to pick the good ones!
